UPDATE: 1 dead, several in critical condition after explosion at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont
One firefighter is dead and least 10 people have been injured in a fire at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont Friday, according to officials.
Emergency responders from multiple towns in and around Waldo County are responding to a fire and possible explosion at a Searsmont lumber mill.
A fire broke out at Chalmette Refining Friday afternoon after residents reported hearing a large explosion, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office. The fire was under control as of around 2 p.m., and no injuries were reported, John Rahaim, director of St. Bernard Homeland Security, said.
Four people were injured in an apartment fire and reported explosion in Des Plaines, Illinois, overnight. Firefighters responded to the apartment fire overnight and found heavy flames and smoke. Video from the scene shows firefighters on ladders working to control the flames. Fire officials confirmed four people were taken to local hospitals.
The roads around Robbins Lumber were quiet Saturday morning, a day after an explosion killed a firefighter and wounded others at the Searsmont mill.
Maine local and national elected office holders are expressing sorrow over the massive Searsmont lumber mill fire and urging people to stay away from the scene. Governor Janet Mills along with U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King,
Fire marshal's office investigators were called to Robbins Lumber and are currently responding to the scene. Video shows smoke and fire coming from the mill.
