MONTEREY COUNTY, CA - A preliminary 2.7 magnitude quake was registered near San Simeon Thursday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
Robert DeGroot, operations team lead for the USGS-managed ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System, told SFGATE that at least four sensors across Nevada detected motion, leading to an automated warning sent out via MyShake Alert to a large portion of California.

SAN BENITO COUNTY, CA - Friday morning, a preliminary 2.0 magnitude quake was detected close to Pinnacles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Just after 8 a.m. Bay Area residents received a MyShake alert warning of magnitude 5.9 earthquake hitting east of Carson City, Nevada close to the Lake Tahoe region. The quake also appeared on the USGS map of latest earthquakes. But within minutes the report of the quake disappeared on the USGS page.
“On December 4, 2025, the ShakeAlert EEW system released an incorrect alert for a magnitude 5.9 earthquake near Reno and Carson City, Nevada,” the statement read. “The event did not occur, and has been deleted from USGS websites and data feeds. The USGS is working to understand the cause of the false alert.”
A series of earthquakes rattled California’s Bay Area near Gilroy on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The largest was a magnitude 4.0 quake centered about 8 kilometers east of Gilroy, followed by a magnitude 3.6 quake southeast of the city and a magnitude 2.7 event to the east.
