The Dungeon at Brougham Castle The dungeon was located in the basement of the castle's keep, it was likely blocked up in the 1840s when Henry Tufton, 11th Earl of Thanet carried out extensive repairs. Access to it was via either a trapdoor or a narrow staircase. Scottish hostages were occasionally taken there during Anglo-Scottish wars.
